Repentance literally means to change your mind, it’s no regret, regret or remorse looks backwards, repentance looks forward and begins to deal with sin in your life.
Regret repeats itself, repentance is a change of your mind or purpose. It’s a decision to do a 180 degree turn.
Repentance whether Paul, Jesus or John, it’s not primarily a feeling. It’s a direction not an emotion, your deciding to change your mind and change how you think.
The word Repentance comes from the Greek:
http://biblehub.com/greek/3340.htm
Original Word: μετανοέω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: metanoeó
Phonetic Spelling: (met-an-o-eh’-o)
Short Definition: I repent, change my mind
Definition: I repent, change my mind, change the inner man (particularly with reference to acceptance of the will of God), repent.
Continually grovelling and having sorrow and waling in our sins is works, it’s not repentance either. Consider your kids, do you really want them to whine and snivel and be sorrowful for a long time over their sin against you or do you just want them to change their mind and go another direction?
Consider the prodigal son, it’s a perfect example. The son returns because he’s starving, not because he’s sorry, the father simply wants him to come home.
We don’t sing the Amazing Wretch song yet we’ve been taught a repentance that has way too much groveling in our sin, we are saved by Grace.
2 things today:
1. some struggle with our emotions, Don’t let your emotions/feelings determine your identity!
2. Jesus paid for your past with His blood so you no longer need to keep moaning about it. just like selling a car and having accidently held back a set of keys you can’t simply go and take that vehicle for a spin, it’s no longer yours, same with your sin once you repent.
Leave it all and turn to Jesus and follow Him.
